“Our favourite!” The 2-3 hour Storms River Kayak & Lilo Adventure is our most popular adventure activity in Tsitsikamma National Park! If you are keen to explore deeper into the Storms River Gorge in Tsitsikamma, and experience the long, deep, quiet pools, then the Kayak and Lilo trip is for you!

We paddle from the Harbour next to the small beach across the ocean, then under the Suspension Bridge and up the beautiful Storms River Mouth. Please note that if the sea is rough, you have to hike to the Suspension Bridge (along a boardwalked trail), where we then hike along the river from the suspension bridge up to the jetty to where you then get on onto your kayaks. This 80m hike is over rocks and difficult terrain.

PADDLE UP THE STORMS RIVER MOUTH

This is where the true Kayaking adventure begins – paddling the Storms River, the pinnacle of Tsitsikamma National Park. After waving to all the tourists photographing you from the Suspension Bridge, we continue the kayak trip up the Stormsrivier. We paddle right into the bats cave and spend time gazing up at the magnificent and spectacular cliffs all around us, all from the comfort of our double sit-on-top kayaks.

LILO DEEPER UP THE STORMS RIVER GORGE

At the low-water point (where the 1 hour kayak trip turns around) we disembark our kayaks and we jump on our unique Lilo’s. (a Lilo is an inflatable mattress that we’ve had specially made for this trip). From here we walk and float over a short section of rocks and simply wade deeper up the river on the Lilo’s. What a stunning view it is, laying on a Lilo at water level, and gazing up to cliffs that touch the sky! At reaching a certain point, we simply turn our Lilo’s around and float back down river to our Kayaks!

CLIFF JUMPING

For the young, brave and adventurous (and the young, brave and adventurous at heart!) we take the opportunity up Storms River to leap off overhangs in the cliff walls into deep pools in the gorge. The cliff jumping adds a good dose of adrenaline for your trip back, as well as some good laughs, friendly encouragement and one-of-a-kind photo opportunities to brag to all your buddies when you get home. Cliff Jumping is not compulsory – you can simply enjoy the spectacle as you leisurely float in the long pools below. We’ve had kids as young as 6 and grandparents (as old as grandparents!) take the leap and enjoy the Lilo-ing, so we can truly say that this activity can be enjoyed by the whole family!

The Lilo trip is our most popular and most recommended trip by local and international tourists, so be sure not to miss out on this unique adventure!

Customer Reviews

Stan and Vuyo were great guides! I will recommend this experience to all. great time thanks! - Pierre Le Grange

It was an amazing and memorable experience. The area is breath taking and the guides were very good at making sure everybody was having a good time while still being safe. I will certainly recommend it to everybody I know. - Karlien Linde

Did this as a mum and daughter adventure and we had a fantastic time. Staff were a lovely bunch, all wetsuits, kayaks etc in great shape, and the ocean and even more so the river were dreamy. Would definitely do it again. Muchos gracias! - Lee-Ann Contell

This was an absolutely awesome morning out for my family and I. Our kids, two girls aged 7 and 9 years, enjoyed every second and would happily do the whole outing again. We had to walk to the secondary launch site, a short distance into the river mouth itself and this was because the coast was being battered by a huge, growing swell, sweeping up the east coast - no-one in their right mind would have launched from the beach on the ocean side of the mouth but I could imagine how lovely that would be under the right conditions. The walk was so cool - on the board-walk, through forest, and past water-falls, before crossing one of the suspension bridges to get to the little concrete jetty. Our guides were amazing, able to engage adults and kids alike, they really brought the whole experience alive with a tangible passion for what they did. The deep gorge walls that squeeze in on and tower over the river were mesmerising and we learnt about the history of the area, and the fauna and flora in and around the river. The kayaking section was easy to do and my wife and I each had one of our kids in front of us on the unsinkable moulded sea-kayaks. When we traded in the kayaks for the lilo's the real fun started and no-one was excluded. Before we knew it there was a competition on who could stand unaided on their lilo in the middle of the river, and the kids were launching themselves off a rock to jump four or five times their height into the river - something they talk about all the time now! It would take next to nothing to convince me, us, to do the whole adventure again and thanks especially to our guides for making it something really special. - S Jacobs

My group of six did the Storms River Kayak & Lilo, and had a hell of a time with our guides Vuyo and Torbs. They were both great, friendly, informative and experienced. The scenery was both pristine and breathtaking. If anyone has a few hours to kill in StormsRivier and isn't afraid to get wet, I'd greatly recommend this activity! - Jian Xuan Lee
